Teaching with Vuvox
Vuvox is a multifaceted multimedia collage and slideshow creation tool. There are so many great tools including in Vuvox that it is tough to choose a feature with to start this review. The basic idea of Vuvox is to allow anyone to create a multimedia panoramic collage. At its most basic level you can use Vuvox to stitch together your photographs into a panorama. Vuvox offers great tools that you can use to edit your images so that they match up perfectly. You can also use the Vuvox editing tools to crop out sections of an image for re-use later in your collage or for use in a separate collage. You can upload images from your computer to Vuvox or import images from your Flickr, SmugMug, or Picasa account.
1. Have the students log onto vovox.com – in the top right corner of the screen they will see “create a free account” – Students should click on there and use their school emails to create an account – please note that there was some issues – if an error message comes up, ask the students to close out and log back onto vuvox.com and sign in as if they already had an account
2. Once the students have created a free account –go to the top tab that says “create” and then under “collage”. Here you will find some fantastic introduction videos. Introduction Videos:
ABOUT
COLLAGE: What is it? 3 min 15.6 MB
HOT SPOTS: Enrich with contextual areas. 45 sec 2.4 MB
CUT-OUT: Introduction to cutting & masking. 3 min 7.7 MB
Play these aloud as a class and have the students follow along with their computers. (please note, these are
fantastic resources for teachers) The cut out tool is great and make sure to show the students where to find it – if you add a picture to the story board and click on it, you will see a pair of scissors. Show the students what happens with invert picture. You can also cut out the pictures using a couple different methods. I just let the students play with it and find their best technique.
3. Once the students have opened their vuvox accounts they can click, “create” and then “collage” it will direct them to a new collage – have the students upload their pictures into the “my media”section.
4. The students will have the rest of the class to work alone and get themselves familiar with vuvox.
5. Once the students have played around with cutting out pictures and adding pictures – introduce text –
when the students are in the edit view, they will see a small “t” on the side of the collage bar. Click on there and the students can click and drag text boxes. The students should have a story that goes along with their PSA
6. Students can then go to freeplaymusic.com and find some music that goes with the PSA. Students should be
warned that their music should go along with the story they are trying to show. The students should click onto save in freeplaymusic.com and then go back to their college –they can upload their music into their “my media” file, just the
same as adding pictures. Once the music has been added – click on the little music sign right next to the text. From there they can select their music. Students should have music that fits with the length of their presentation. Either that or click on replay.
7. Another note to keep in mind – have the students go into their “settings” tab and un-click the box that says add page jumps. If you have the page jumps on, it tends to make the presentations a little bit choppy.
8. When they are finished and ready to submit their presentations they should go to the publish button and
make sure it is clicked on “make this collage public”. If they don’t do that step you will not be able to go in and view their collage because it will be just a draft. From there I had them email me the link to their vuvox by clicking
the envelope on the bottom left of their story board.
